Description

What is Treclin® Gel?

Treclin® Gel is a prescription-only topical treatment used to treat mild to moderate acne. It contains two active ingredients, clindamycin and tretinoin, which work together to reduce acne-causing bacteria, unblock pores and improve inflammation.

Acne is a common skin condition that can cause blackheads, whiteheads, inflamed spots and pimples. It most commonly affects the face, chest and back and can affect both teenagers and adults.

At The Kingston Pharmacy, Treclin® Gel is supplied as part of our clinician-led acne treatment service following a suitability assessment by our clinicians.

Available Strengths

Treclin® Gel contains:

  • Clindamycin 1% w/w
  • Tretinoin 0.025% w/w

The treatment is supplied as a topical gel for application to affected areas of the skin.

How Does Treclin® Gel Work?

Treclin® Gel combines two active ingredients that work together to treat acne.

Clindamycin is an antibiotic that helps reduce the growth of acne-causing bacteria and decreases inflammation within the skin.

Tretinoin is a topical retinoid that increases skin cell turnover, helping to unblock pores, prevent new blackheads and whiteheads from forming, and improve the appearance of existing acne.

Together, these ingredients target several of the underlying causes of acne to help achieve clearer skin.

Treatment may help to:

  • Reduce inflamed spots and pimples
  • Treat blackheads and whiteheads
  • Help prevent blocked pores
  • Reduce acne-causing bacteria
  • Improve overall skin texture
  • Support clearer, healthier-looking skin

For best results, treatment should be used consistently alongside a gentle skincare routine.

Who May Be Suitable for Treclin® Gel?

You may be suitable for treatment if you:

  • Are aged 18 years or over
  • Have mild to moderate acne
  • Experience inflamed spots, papules, pustules or blackheads
  • Are looking for a combination prescription acne treatment
  • Meet the prescribing criteria following clinical assessment

All patients must complete a clinical assessment before treatment can be prescribed.

How to Use Treclin® Gel

Treclin® Gel should be applied exactly as directed by your clinician.

Wash and dry the affected skin before applying a thin layer of gel once daily in the evening.

Avoid applying excessive amounts, as this will not improve results and may increase skin irritation.

Wash your hands after application and avoid contact with the eyes, lips, nostrils and other mucous membranes.

As tretinoin can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen during the day and avoid excessive sun exposure.

Always follow the instructions provided by your clinician and use the medication exactly as prescribed.

Potential Benefits

When prescribed appropriately, Treclin® Gel may:

  • Reduce inflammatory acne
  • Help prevent new spots from developing
  • Treat blackheads and whiteheads
  • Improve skin texture
  • Support clearer, healthier-looking skin
  • Provide clinician-supervised treatment and monitoring

Possible Side Effects

Like all medicines, Treclin® Gel can cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them.

Common side effects may include:

  • Dry skin
  • Redness
  • Peeling
  • Mild burning or stinging
  • Skin irritation
  • Increased sensitivity to sunlight

These effects are usually most noticeable during the first few weeks of treatment and often improve as your skin adapts.

Always read the Patient Information Leaflet and consult your healthcare professional if you experience persistent or concerning symptoms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Many patients begin to notice improvements after 6 to 8 weeks of regular use, although it may take up to 12 weeks to achieve the full benefit.

Can I use moisturiser with Treclin® Gel?

Yes. Using a non-comedogenic moisturiser can help reduce dryness and irritation whilst maintaining your skin barrier.

Important Information

Treclin® Gel is not suitable for everyone and should only be used following an appropriate clinical assessment.

Treclin® Gel should not be used during pregnancy or if you are planning to become pregnant because it contains tretinoin, a topical retinoid. Your clinician will assess your suitability during the consultation process.

Acne often requires several weeks of consistent treatment before noticeable improvement occurs. Continuing treatment as prescribed and following a suitable skincare routine can help achieve the best results.

Always use medicines exactly as prescribed and read the Patient Information Leaflet before use.
