What Is Period Delay Treatment?

Period delay treatment lets you temporarily postpone your period using a medication called Norethisterone 5mg. It works by maintaining stable progesterone levels, preventing your period from starting until you stop the tablets.
You need to start the medication three days before your expected period for it to work effectively and you can continue it for up to 17 days to delay your period. Once you finish the course, your period normally returns two to three days later.

Common Questions

How does Norethisterone delay my period? +

Norethisterone is a synthetic form of progesterone. Taking it keeps your hormone levels stable, preventing the drop that triggers menstruation. Once you stop the tablets, your period normally arrives within 2–3 days.

How early do I need to start taking it? +

You must start Norethisterone 3 days before your expected period. If you start too late, it may not work effectively.

How long can I delay my period for? +

You can usually use Norethisterone to delay your period for up to 17 days as long as you’re taking the tablets three times a day.

Is this treatment safe? +

For most women, yes. Norethisterone is widely used and well-tolerated. Our clinicians review your medical history to ensure it’s suitable and safe for you.

Can I use Norethisterone if I’m on the pill? +

You can use Norethisterone with the progesterone-only pill, but not with the combined contraceptive pill. If you are on the combined pill, a different method of period delay may be recommended.

Does Norethisterone work as contraception? +

No, it does not prevent pregnancy. You should continue to use your usual contraception.

How quickly will I receive my treatment? +

Once your assessment is approved, you can collect your medication from your chosen pharmacy the same day, or have it delivered discreetly to your home.
