What Is the Oral Contraception Service?
The oral contraceptive pill is a safe and effective way to prevent pregnancy when taken correctly. It’s widely used, easy to take. It comes as two main types. The combined pill contains oestrogen and progestogen, which prevent ovulation and make it harder for sperm to reach an egg. The progestogen-only pill, or mini pill, works by thickening cervical mucus and thinning the womb lining, and is often recommended for people who cannot take oestrogen.
Through the NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service, you can start the pill for the first time with a private consultation with one of our trained clinicians, or renew your prescription for an ongoing supply without needing a consultation. Our pharmacists provide friendly, confidential support and make sure you receive the right pill for you.
