What Is a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)?

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common infection that affects the bladder, urethra, or urinary system. It’s particularly common in women and can cause symptoms such as a burning sensation when passing urine, needing to urinate more often, lower abdominal pain, and cloudy or strong-smelling urine.
Through the NHS Pharmacy First service, women aged 16–64 with uncomplicated UTIs can now be assessed and treated directly by a trained pharmacy clinician, without needing a GP appointment.
If your symptoms are suitable, we can provide NHS-funded prescription treatment on the same day, helping you feel better faster.
