What Is the Oral Contraception Service?

The oral contraceptive pill is a safe and effective way to prevent pregnancy when taken correctly. It’s widely used, easy to take. It comes as two main types. The combined pill contains oestrogen and progestogen, which prevent ovulation and make it harder for sperm to reach an egg. The progestogen-only pill, or mini pill, works by thickening cervical mucus and thinning the womb lining, and is often recommended for people who cannot take oestrogen.
Through the NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service, you can start the pill for the first time with a private consultation with one of our trained clinicians, or renew your prescription for an ongoing supply without needing a consultation. Our pharmacists provide friendly, confidential support and make sure you receive the right pill for you.

Common Questions

Is oral contraception service free? +

Yes. All women can access the contraceptive pill free through the NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service.

How long will the pill be supplied for? +

For first-time users, the pill is usually supplied for three months to ensure it’s the right choice and that you understand how to take it safely. After that, if everything is going well, you can receive a longer supply of six to twelve months at a time, unless there’s a medical reason to review it sooner. Resupply requests will automatically be for 6 months duration

Will the pill affect my fertility long-term? +

No. Fertility returns to normal once you stop taking it.

Do I need a consultation? +

If you are starting the pill for the first time, a private consultation with a clinician is required. This ensures the pill type is suitable for you and that you understand how to take it safely. If you are already on the pill and just need a resupply, no consultation is needed.

Can I switch between types of pill? +

Yes. During a first-time consultation, the pharmacist can advise whether the combined pill or progestogen-only pill is more suitable for you. If you are already taking a pill but want to switch, a brief consultation may be recommended to discuss your options.

What if I miss a pill? +

Our clinicians will provide guidance on what to do if you miss a dose, as instructions differ between the combined and progestogen-only pill. You will be emailed a missed pill guide for you to refer to.

Is this service confidential? +

Yes. All consultations and prescriptions are private and confidential. Your information will not be shared without your consent.

Can I get advice on other contraception options? +

Yes. During your consultation, our pharmacists can provide advice on a range of contraception options, including condoms, the contraceptive implant, injections, the patch, or the intrauterine device (IUD). They can help you choose the method that best suits your lifestyle, health, and preferences.
