What is Levonorgestrel?

Levonorgestrel is an emergency contraceptive (commonly referred to as the “morning after pill”) used to help prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure, such as a missed pill or condom breakage. It contains levonorgestrel 1.5mg, the same active ingredient found in Levonelle OneStep. When taken within 72 hours (3 days) of unprotected intercourse, Levonorgestrel is a safe and effective option for emergency contraception.

Who is the ideal candidate for Levonorgestrel?

Levonorgestrel is suitable for women of reproductive age who:

  • Have had unprotected sex

  • Have experienced contraceptive failure (e.g. condom breakage or missed oral contraceptives)

  • Need a cost-effective emergency contraceptive option

Levonorgestrel may not be suitable if you:

  • Are already pregnant

  • Have certain digestive conditions affecting absorption

  • Are taking medications that reduce the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives (e.g. some anti-epileptics, antibiotics, or herbal remedies like St John’s Wort)

Our clinicians will assess your medical history to ensure Levonorgestrel is safe and appropriate for you.

How does Levonorgestrel work to prevent pregnancy?

Levonorgestrel works mainly by preventing or delaying ovulation, which means it stops the release of an egg from the ovary. If no egg is released, fertilisation cannot occur. It may also alter the cervical mucus and endometrial lining, but its primary mechanism is ovulation delay. Levonorgestrel is not effective if you are already pregnant and will not affect an existing pregnancy.

How do I take Levonorgestrel?

  • Take one 1.5mg tablet as soon as possible after unprotected sex (ideally within 12 hours, but no later than 72 hours).

  • It can be taken with or without food.

  • If you vomit within 3 hours of taking the tablet, speak to a healthcare provider—you may need another dose.

What are the main side effects of Levonorgestrel?

As with all medications, Levonorgestrel may cause side effects, though not everyone gets them. Common side effects include:

  • Nausea

  • Headache

  • Abdominal pain

  • Fatigue

  • Breast tenderness

  • Irregular bleeding or changes to your next period

These side effects are usually temporary and mild.

Will Levonorgestrel affect my future fertility?

Levonorgestrel is intended for occasional use only and does not affect your long-term fertility. It does not replace regular contraception and should not be used as a routine method of birth control.

What else should I know about Levonorgestrel?

  • Levonorgestrel does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

  • Your next period may come earlier or later than expected. If it’s more than 5–7 days late, or if the bleeding is lighter or heavier than usual, take a pregnancy test.

  • It is not recommended to take multiple doses of Levonorgestrel in the same menstrual cycle without medical advice.
