What is RSV
RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) is a common respiratory infection that can cause serious illness in older adults, people with long-term health conditions, smokers, and pregnant women. It spreads easily through coughs, sneezes, and close contact.
A single-dose RSV vaccine helps your immune system fight the virus and reduces the risk of severe symptoms, hospitalisation, and complications. It is recommended for Adults aged 60+, people with heart/lung/immune conditions as well as Pregnant women between 28–36 weeks (to protect both mother and newborn).

Common Questions
The vaccine is recommended for adults aged 60 and over, pregnant women between 28–36 weeks, smokers, and people with long-term conditions such as heart or lung disease, diabetes, or weakened immune systems. If you’re unsure, our online assessment will guide you.
Although RSV often causes mild cold-like symptoms, it can lead to serious infections such as pneumonia or worsening of existing conditions. Older adults and people with long-term illnesses are more likely to need hospital care if they catch RSV.
No. The RSV vaccine is not a live vaccine, so it cannot give you RSV or cause an infection.
Just one dose. This provides protection for the RSV season and reduces your risk of severe illness.
Yes. Pregnant women between 28–36 weeks can safely receive the RSV vaccine. It helps protect both you and your newborn against serious respiratory infections.
In England, some people can receive the RSV vaccine for free through the NHS. This includes:
Pregnant women (to protect their newborn from birth to 6 months)
Adults aged 75 to 79 (up to the day before their 80th birthday)
