Common Questions

What conditions can you treat through Pharmacy First? +

We can assess and treat seven common conditions: sinusitis, sore throat, earache, infected insect bites, impetigo, shingles, and uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) in women. If your symptoms match one of these conditions, we can often provide same-day treatment without you needing to see your GP.

Is this service really free? +

Yes, if you’re eligible for free NHS prescriptions (under 16, over 60, pregnant, have certain medical conditions, or receive benefits). If you normally pay for prescriptions, you’ll pay the standard NHS prescription charge (currently £9.90 per item) if medication is needed. The consultation itself is always free.

How is this different from seeing my GP? +

It’s often faster. We have same-day or next-day appointments, whereas GP waits can be days or weeks. Our clinicians are specially trained to assess and treat these specific conditions, and we can provide prescription medication immediately if needed. For these common conditions, we offer the same level of care without the long wait.

Do I need to register with your pharmacy? +

No registration needed. As long as you’re registered with a GP practice in England, you can use our Pharmacy First service regardless of where you normally get your prescriptions. It’s designed to be accessible and convenient.

What happens during my appointment? +

Your appointment takes 10-15 minutes. Our clinician will ask about your symptoms, medical history, and any medications you take. They’ll conduct a brief examination if needed (like checking your throat or ears), provide a diagnosis, and either supply medication immediately or advise on self-care. You’ll leave with clear guidance on what to do next.

What if my condition is more serious than you can treat? +

If during the consultation we identify something that needs GP or emergency care, we’ll refer you immediately and provide clear guidance on where to go. Your safety is our priority, we’ll always direct you to the right level of care.

Will my GP know I've used this service? +

Yes, with your consent we share information with your GP practice so your medical records are complete. This ensures coordinated care and means your GP is aware of any treatment you’ve received.

Is there an age limit for the service? +

Age eligibility varies by condition. Generally, we can treat people aged 1 year and older for most conditions. For UTIs, we treat women aged 16-64. During booking, we’ll confirm if you or your family member is eligible for the specific condition you’re concerned about.
