What hirsutism is, what causes excessive hair growth in women, and the treatment options that may help.

What Is Hirsutism?

Hirsutism is a condition that causes excessive growth of dark, coarse hair in women. The hair typically develops in areas where men commonly grow hair. While some facial and body hair is normal for all women, hirsutism refers to hair growth that is more noticeable, thicker or darker than expected.

The condition can affect women of all ages but often becomes more noticeable during adulthood when hormonal changes occur. For many women, the emotional impact of hirsutism can be just as significant as the physical symptoms — concerns about appearance, confidence and self-esteem are extremely common.

Commonly affected areas

  • Upper lip
  • Chin and jawline
  • Neck
  • Chest
  • Abdomen
  • Back

What Does Hirsutism Look Like?

Hirsutism can vary considerably from person to person. Some women may notice only a few coarse hairs on the chin or upper lip, while others develop more extensive hair growth affecting multiple areas of the body. The hair is often darker, thicker and more noticeable than the fine, light-coloured hair that naturally covers much of the body.

Symptoms may develop gradually over months or years, which is why many women do not immediately recognise that there may be an underlying cause.

Dark facial hair
Coarse chin hairs
Excessive upper lip hair
Increased hair growth along the jawline
Hair growth on the chest or abdomen
Thicker body hair than previously experienced

Common Symptoms of Hirsutism

The most obvious symptom of hirsutism is unwanted hair growth. However, some women also experience additional symptoms, particularly when hormonal imbalances are involved. Not everyone with hirsutism experiences these, but their presence can sometimes provide clues about the underlying cause.

Irregular periods
Acne
Oily skin
Thinning scalp hair
Weight gain
Difficulty becoming pregnant

If excessive hair growth develops alongside other hormonal symptoms, further assessment may be appropriate.

What Causes Excessive Hair Growth in Women?

In many cases, hirsutism is linked to increased levels of hormones known as androgens — often referred to as “male hormones”, although women naturally produce them too. When androgen levels increase, or when hair follicles become more sensitive to these hormones, excessive hair growth can occur.

For some women, no specific cause can be identified. This is sometimes referred to as idiopathic hirsutism. Regardless of the cause, effective management options are often available.

  • Genetics and family history
  • Certain medical conditions
  • Hormonal changes
  • Some medications

The Role of Hormones in Hirsutism

Hormones play a central role in most cases of hirsutism. Androgens influence how hair follicles behave and determine where thicker hair develops on the body. Higher androgen activity can cause increased facial hair growth, darker and coarser hair, and more rapid hair growth.

Understanding the hormonal component of hirsutism is important because treatment may sometimes involve addressing the underlying cause rather than simply removing the hair itself.

Hirsutism often develops during hormonal changes at

  • Puberty
  • Reproductive years
  • Perimenopause
  • Menopause

Common Conditions Associated With Hirsutism

Several medical conditions can contribute to excessive hair growth. One of the most common is polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which affects hormone levels and is a leading cause of hirsutism in women. It is important to remember that most cases of hirsutism are not caused by anything serious.

However, if symptoms develop suddenly or are becoming progressively worse, medical assessment may be advisable.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
Hormonal imbalances
Certain ovarian conditions
Adrenal gland disorders
Some medications
Rare hormone-producing tumours

How Hirsutism Is Diagnosed

Diagnosis usually begins with a discussion about your symptoms and medical history. Understanding the reason behind the hair growth can help ensure the most appropriate treatment is selected.

A healthcare professional may ask about

  • When the hair growth started and which areas are affected
  • Menstrual cycle changes
  • Family history
  • Current medications
  • Other hormonal symptoms

In some cases, further investigations may be recommended to identify any underlying hormonal cause.

Treatment Options for Hirsutism

Several treatment options are available depending on the cause and severity of symptoms. Approaches are often combined — hair removal methods manage existing hair while other treatments address the rate of new growth or the underlying cause.

Hair removal
Shaving, Waxing, Threading and Plucking

These methods remove visible hair but do not affect future hair growth. They remain the most common approach for day-to-day management.

Longer-lasting reduction
Laser Hair Removal

Laser treatment targets hair follicles and can provide longer-lasting reduction in hair growth for some women. Multiple sessions are usually required and results vary between individuals.

Addressing the cause
Managing Underlying Conditions

If an underlying hormonal condition such as PCOS is identified, treating that condition may help reduce future hair growth over time.

Prescription treatment
Topical Prescription Treatments

Prescription treatments may be recommended to help manage excessive facial hair growth, often used alongside other hair removal methods.

How Vaniqa Cream Works

One prescription treatment that may be suitable for some women is Vaniqa Cream. Vaniqa contains eflornithine, which works by slowing the growth of facial hair through its effect on a specific enzyme involved in hair production. It is licensed for reducing excessive facial hair growth in women aged 18 years and over.

Unlike shaving or waxing, Vaniqa does not remove existing hair. Instead, it helps slow the rate at which new hair grows. Many women continue to use their usual hair removal method while using treatment.

Results are gradual, and it may take several weeks before improvements become noticeable. Continued use is generally required to maintain the benefits of treatment. During a consultation, our pharmacy team can assess whether Vaniqa may be suitable for your symptoms.
