How Does the Arexvy RSV Vaccine Work?

How Does the Arexvy RSV Vaccine Work? at The Kingston Pharmacy, Kingston upon Thames

A simple guide to the Arexvy RSV vaccine, how it helps protect against respiratory syncytial virus, who can receive it, and what to expect after vaccination.

What Is Arexvy?

Arexvy is a vaccine designed to help protect against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). RSV is a common respiratory virus that can cause coughs, colds and flu-like symptoms. While many people recover without complications, RSV can lead to serious illness in older adults and people with certain underlying health conditions.

Arexvy was developed specifically to help reduce the risk of severe RSV disease in adults who are more vulnerable to complications. By helping the immune system recognise RSV before exposure, the vaccine can provide important protection during the respiratory virus season.

How Does Arexvy Work?

Arexvy works by training your immune system to recognise part of the RSV virus. The vaccine contains a protein found on the surface of RSV — this protein cannot cause infection, but it helps the immune system learn how to identify and respond to the virus.

After vaccination, your body produces antibodies and activates immune cells that can respond more quickly if you come into contact with RSV in the future. Like other vaccines, Arexvy does not treat RSV infection — instead, it helps prevent serious disease before exposure occurs.

Who Is Eligible for the RSV Vaccine?

According to current NHS guidance in England, the RSV vaccine is offered as part of a national vaccination programme to help protect those most at risk of serious RSV infection.

  • Adults aged 75 to 79 years old
  • Those turning 75 years old on or after 1 September 2024, who will be offered the vaccine when they become eligible
  • Pregnant women from 28 weeks onwards, to help protect their baby from RSV during their first months of life
Important to note

  • The NHS is also inviting those already aged 75 to 79 when the programme began, as part of a catch-up campaign
  • Adults aged 80 or over are not currently eligible for the routine NHS RSV programme unless invited as part of the initial catch-up
  • Eligibility criteria can change as NHS guidance is updated — our pharmacy team can advise on the latest recommendations

How Effective Is Arexvy?

Clinical studies have shown that Arexvy provides strong protection against RSV lower respiratory tract disease in older adults. While no vaccine provides 100% protection, vaccination significantly lowers the risk of serious illness if you are exposed to the virus — which is particularly important for older adults, who are more likely to experience complications affecting the lungs and breathing.

The vaccine is designed to reduce the risk of

  • Severe RSV infection
  • RSV-related complications
  • Hospital admission due to RSV

How Long Does Protection Last?

Protection from Arexvy is not immediate — it typically takes a few weeks after vaccination for the immune system to build a protective response. Current evidence suggests that protection remains strong throughout the RSV season and can continue beyond this period.

As research continues, recommendations regarding future booster doses may evolve. If updated guidance becomes available, our pharmacy team can advise on any future vaccination recommendations.

Common Side Effects

Most people tolerate the Arexvy vaccine well. As with any vaccine, some side effects can occur while the immune system responds — but these are usually mild and short-lived, often resolving within a few days. Many people experience no side effects at all, or only minor discomfort after vaccination.

The Arexvy vaccine may not be suitable for everyone. Before vaccination, our clinician will review your medical history and discuss any relevant health conditions to ensure the vaccine is appropriate for you. If vaccination is not suitable, we can advise on the most appropriate next steps.

Arexvy may not be suitable if you:

  • Have previously had a serious allergic reaction to a vaccine or any of its ingredients
  • Are currently unwell with a high temperature
  • Have concerns about allergies or previous vaccine reactions
