Why Get the MMR Vaccine?

The MMR vaccine protects against measles, mumps, and rubella – three highly contagious viral infections that can cause serious complications in both children and adults.
Measles can lead to pneumonia, brain inflammation, and long-term health problems. Mumps can cause painful swelling and, in some cases, fertility issues. Rubella is usually mild but can be very serious during pregnancy.
The MMR vaccine provides long-lasting protection and is routinely given in childhood, but many adults may be unprotected due to missed or incomplete vaccination

The MMR vaccine protects against:
Measles
Mumps
Rubella (German measles)
These infections can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia, meningitis, hearing loss, infertility, and complications during pregnancy.

The MMR vaccine is recommended for anyone who has not received two doses of MMR vaccine or does not have adequate protection against measles, mumps, and rubella. This includes children, teenagers, and adults who may have missed vaccinations earlier in life.

Yes. Adults who have not received two documented doses of the MMR vaccine can receive catch-up vaccination at any age. Many adults are unsure whether they received both doses during childhood, particularly if they were vaccinated before the two-dose schedule was routinely introduced or if their vaccination records are incomplete. If you do not have evidence that you have received two doses, it is generally safe to be vaccinated again. Receiving the recommended two doses helps provide long-term protection against measles, mumps, and rubella and can be particularly important for healthcare workers, university students, travellers, and anyone who may come into contact with vulnerable individuals. If you are unsure about your vaccination status, our pharmacy team can help advise whether MMR vaccination may be appropriate for you.

Full protection is usually achieved after two doses of MMR vaccine given at least one month apart. If you have only received one dose previously, a second dose may be recommended to maximise protection.

Most people who have received two doses of MMR vaccine do not require a routine booster. If you are unsure of your vaccination history, our pharmacy team can advise on whether vaccination may be appropriate.

From time to time, measles outbreaks occur in the UK when vaccination rates fall. Maintaining high levels of MMR vaccination helps protect individuals and communities and reduces the risk of outbreaks spreading. Measles outbreaks also occur in many countries around the world, making MMR vaccination particularly important for travellers. If you are travelling abroad, especially to destinations experiencing measles outbreaks or where vaccination coverage is lower, ensuring you are fully vaccinated with two doses of MMR can help protect you and reduce the risk of bringing infection back to the UK.

Most side effects are mild and temporary. Common side effects may include:
Soreness, redness, or swelling at the injection site
Mild fever
Mild rash
Feeling generally unwell for a few days
Serious side effects are very uncommon.

Some countries have experienced outbreaks of measles and other vaccine-preventable diseases. Travellers who are not fully vaccinated may be advised to receive the MMR vaccine before travelling, particularly when visiting destinations with ongoing outbreaks.

The MMR vaccine is not usually given during pregnancy because it is a live vaccine. If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, our clinician can advise you on the appropriate timing of vaccination.

Yes. The MMR vaccine has been used worldwide for many years and has an excellent safety record. It has been extensively studied and monitored, and serious side effects are extremely rare.
