Description

What is Nystatin 100,000 Units/ml Oral Suspension?

Nystatin 100,000 Units/ml Oral Suspension is a prescription-only antifungal medicine used to treat oral thrush (oral candidiasis). It contains the active ingredient nystatin, which works by treating fungal infections caused by Candida species.

Oral thrush is a common fungal infection that can cause white patches inside the mouth, soreness, redness, difficulty swallowing and an unpleasant taste. It can affect adults of all ages and is more common in people using inhaled corticosteroids, dentures, antibiotics or those with certain underlying medical conditions.

At The Kingston Pharmacy, Nystatin Oral Suspension is supplied as part of our clinician-led oral thrush treatment service following a suitability assessment by our clinicians.

Available Strengths

Nystatin Oral Suspension contains:

  • Nystatin 100,000 units/ml

The treatment is supplied as an oral suspension for use inside the mouth.

How Does Nystatin Oral Suspension Work?

Nystatin is an antifungal medicine that works by damaging the cell membrane of Candida fungi, causing the fungal cells to die and allowing the infection to clear.

Unlike many oral medicines, Nystatin works directly within the mouth and is only absorbed into the body in negligible amounts, making it an effective treatment for oral fungal infections.

Treatment may help to:

  • Eliminate the fungal infection causing oral thrush
  • Reduce soreness and discomfort
  • Clear white patches inside the mouth
  • Improve swallowing and eating comfort
  • Help restore normal oral health

For best results, treatment should be continued for the full course prescribed, even if symptoms improve sooner.

Who May Be Suitable for Nystatin Oral Suspension?

You may be suitable for treatment if you:

  • Are aged 18 years or over
  • Have symptoms of oral thrush
  • Have white patches inside the mouth or on the tongue
  • Are experiencing soreness or discomfort in the mouth
  • Meet the prescribing criteria following clinical assessment

All patients must complete a clinical assessment before treatment can be prescribed.

How to Use Nystatin Oral Suspension

Nystatin Oral Suspension should be used exactly as directed by your clinician.

Shake the bottle well before use. Measure the prescribed dose using an oral syringe or measuring spoon.

The suspension should be held in the mouth for as long as possible before swallowing to allow the medicine to come into contact with the affected areas.

Avoid eating or drinking for around 30 minutes after using the medicine where possible, to allow it to work effectively.

Always complete the full course of treatment, even if your symptoms improve before the medication is finished.

Potential Benefits

When prescribed appropriately, Nystatin Oral Suspension may:

  • Effectively treat oral thrush
  • Reduce soreness and irritation
  • Clear white patches within the mouth
  • Improve comfort when eating and drinking
  • Provide targeted antifungal treatment
  • Offer clinician-supervised treatment and monitoring

Possible Side Effects

Like all medicines, Nystatin Oral Suspension can cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them.

Common side effects may include:

  • Mild nausea
  • Stomach discomfort
  • Diarrhoea
  • Mouth irritation
  • Unpleasant taste

These effects are generally mild and temporary.

Always read the Patient Information Leaflet and consult your healthcare professional if you experience persistent or concerning symptoms.

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly does Nystatin work?

Many patients begin to notice an improvement within a few days of starting treatment, although it is important to complete the full prescribed course to ensure the infection has cleared.

Can I eat or drink after using Nystatin?

It is generally recommended to avoid eating or drinking for around 30 minutes after using the suspension to allow the medicine to remain in contact with the affected areas for longer.

What if I wear dentures?

Dentures should be removed and cleaned thoroughly each day, as they can harbour the yeast responsible for oral thrush. Your clinician or pharmacist can advise you on good denture hygiene during treatment.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Do not use a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Do I need a GP prescription?

No. Nystatin Oral Suspension is a Prescription Only Medicine (POM) but it doesn’t require a GP prescription. At the Kingston pharmacy it can be supplied following assessment by one of our clinicians.

Important Information

Nystatin Oral Suspension is not suitable for everyone and should only be used following an appropriate clinical assessment.

If your symptoms do not improve after completing treatment, if they worsen, or if you experience recurrent episodes of oral thrush, further medical assessment may be required.

Maintaining good oral hygiene, cleaning dentures thoroughly and rinsing your mouth after using inhaled corticosteroids may help reduce the risk of future episodes.

Always use medicines exactly as prescribed and read the Patient Information Leaflet before use.
