What is the Hepatitis B Vaccine?

The Hepatitis B vaccine helps protect against Hepatitis B, a viral infection that affects the liver and can lead to serious long-term health problems, including chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, and liver cancer.

Hepatitis B is spread through contact with infected blood and bodily fluids. Travellers may be at increased risk depending on their destination, planned activities, medical treatment abroad, or potential exposure through sexual contact.

Vaccination is one of the most effective ways to protect against Hepatitis B when travelling to areas where the infection is more common.

The Hepatitis B vaccine is available following a travel health consultation with our qualified travel health team.

it is suitable for both adults and children

What Does the Hepatitis B Vaccine Protect Against?

The Hepatitis B vaccine protects against Hepatitis B, a viral infection that attacks the liver and can cause both acute and chronic illness.

The virus is commonly spread through:

  • Contact with infected blood
  • Unprotected sexual contact
  • Contaminated medical or dental equipment
  • Sharing needles or sharp instruments
  • Mother-to-child transmission during birth

Risk levels vary depending on:

  • Your destination
  • Length of travel
  • Planned activities
  • Access to healthcare facilities
  • Potential exposure to blood or bodily fluids

Our clinicians will assess your itinerary and advise whether vaccination is recommended.

Who Should Consider the Hepatitis B Vaccine?

The vaccine may be recommended for:

  • Travellers visiting countries where Hepatitis B is common
  • Backpackers and long-term travellers
  • Healthcare workers travelling abroad
  • Humanitarian aid workers and volunteers
  • People visiting friends and relatives overseas
  • Travellers who may require medical treatment abroad
  • Individuals planning extended stays in higher-risk regions

Recommendations vary according to destination and individual risk factors.

Who May Not Be Suitable?

This vaccine may not be suitable if you:

  • Have previously experienced a severe allergic reaction to the vaccine or any of its ingredients
  • Are currently unwell with a high temperature
  • Have certain medical conditions affecting the immune system

Our clinicians will review your medical history before vaccination.

Vaccination Schedule

The Hepatitis B vaccine is available using either a standard schedule or an accelerated schedule, depending on how soon you are travelling.

Standard Schedule

The standard course consists of three doses:

  • Dose 1: Chosen start date
  • Dose 2: 1 month after the first dose
  • Dose 3: 6 months after the first dose

This schedule provides excellent long-term protection and is the preferred option when there is sufficient time before travel.

Accelerated Schedule

For travellers departing at short notice, an accelerated course can be given:

  • Dose 1: Day 0
  • Dose 2: Day 7
  • Dose 3: Day 21

A fourth booster dose is required 12 months after the first dose to ensure long-term protection.

The most appropriate schedule will be discussed during your consultation.

Ideally, travellers should start the Hepatitis B vaccination course at least 6 months before departure to allow sufficient time to complete the standard 3-dose schedule and achieve long-term protection.

However, if you are travelling sooner, an accelerated schedule can be used:

  • Travelling in 1–2 weeks: An accelerated course may be suitable.
  • Travelling in 3–4 weeks: There is usually enough time to complete the accelerated course before departure.
  • Travelling in less than 1 week: Vaccination may still be beneficial, and our travel health team will advise on the best course of action based on your destination and risk of exposure.

For the best possible protection, the first dose should be given as early as possible before travel. Even if there is insufficient time to complete the full course before departure, starting vaccination can still provide some protection and allow the course to be completed after travel if necessary.
