Why Get the MMR Vaccine?

The MMR vaccine protects against measles, mumps, and rubella – three highly contagious viral infections that can cause serious complications in both children and adults.
Measles can lead to pneumonia, brain inflammation, and long-term health problems. Mumps can cause painful swelling and, in some cases, fertility issues. Rubella is usually mild but can be very serious during pregnancy.
The MMR vaccine provides long-lasting protection and is routinely given in childhood, but many adults may be unprotected due to missed or incomplete vaccination

Common Questions

Who should have the MMR vaccine? +

The MMR vaccine is recommended for children as part of the routine childhood immunisation programme and for adults who have not received two doses previously.

Can adults have the MMR vaccine? +

Yes. Adults can safely receive the MMR vaccine, particularly if they are unsure of their vaccination history or only received one dose in childhood.

Is the MMR vaccine safe? +

Yes. The MMR vaccine has been used worldwide for many years and has an excellent safety record. Serious side effects are very rare.

How many doses of the MMR vaccine are needed? +

Two doses are recommended for full protection. If you’re unsure how many doses you’ve had, your clinician can advise during your consultation.

What happens during the appointment? +

The appointment usually takes around 10–15 minutes. The clinician will check suitability, administer the vaccine, and provide aftercare advice.

What side effects might occur? +

Common side effects include a sore arm, mild fever, or rash. These are usually mild and resolve on their own.
