Mounjaro Explained

Mounjaro is a medication designed to improve blood sugar levels, reduce cravings, and suppress appetite by targeting GLP-1 receptors in the body. On average, users can achieve a 22% reduction in body weight. The effectiveness of Mounjaro is enhanced when combined with a calorie-reduced diet and regular exercise.

Mounjaro Eligibility

Mounjaro is approved for individuals with a BMI over 30 or those with a BMI over 27 who also have weight-related health issues such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure. It should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. If you are planning to conceive, discontinue Mounjaro at least one month before trying.

Your clinician will assess your medical history through an online questionnaire to ensure Mounjaro is safe and suitable for you.

How to use Mounjaro

Mounjaro is administered via a self-injecting pen, which is injected under the skin, typically in the stomach, thigh, or upper arm. Your clinician will provide guidance through videos, diagrams, and in-person demonstrations.

The dosage schedule is personalised based on your current weight, target weight, and overall health. Typically, the starting dose is 2.5mg, which is increased every 4 weeks until the maximum dose is reached. If side effects occur, you may remain on a dose for longer than 4 weeks to allow your body to adjust. Additionally, if you are satisfied with the weight loss achieved at a certain dose, you may continue with that dose.

Side effects of Mounjaro

Like all medications, Mounjaro may cause side effects, primarily gastrointestinal, such as nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, and vomiting. These side effects are usually dose-related and tend to diminish over time as your body adjusts.

Other common side effects include initial fatigue, light-headedness, acid reflux, and excess gas. Rare side effects include pancreatitis and anaphylaxis in case of an allergy. A patient information leaflet detailing all potential side effects will be provided

Reducing Side effects

  • Stay hydrated to reduce gastric issues like diarrhoea and vomiting
  • Inject Mounjaro on the same day each week to maintain a regular interval between doses
  • Increase dietary fibre by consuming more fruits, vegetables, oats and legumes if you experience constipation

Mounjaro and the Birth Control Pill

Mounjaro can reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills. Patients using oral contraceptives should also use an additional barrier method, such as a condom, to prevent pregnancy.

Switching From Wegovy or Saxenda to Mounjaro

If transitioning from another weight loss treatment like Mounjaro or Saxenda to Wegovy, a one-month waiting period is necessary to allow your body to clear the previous medication. Your clinician will guide you through the safest method of switching.
