What Is the Pharmacy First Service?
Pharmacy First is an NHS service that allows you to get free advice and treatment for several common conditions directly from a participating pharmacy. You don’t need a GP appointment or referral. Our clinicians can assess your symptoms and provide treatment where appropriate. The service is fast, convenient, and designed to make it easier for you to get help when you need it. Our Pharmacy First service is available at our pharmacy at 53 Surbiton Road, Kingston upon Thames. We provide free NHS treatment for patients registered with GP practices across Kingston upon Thames and the surrounding areas, including Surbiton, New Malden, Twickenham, and Richmond. If you need same-day treatment in Kingston without a GP appointment, our trained clinicians are here to help.

Common Questions
The Pharmacy First Service allows pharmacists to assess and treat:
Sinusitis
Sore throat
Earache
Infected insect bites
Impetigo
Shingles
Uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) in women
Our pharmacist will assess your symptoms and determine whether treatment can be provided through the service.
Yes, if you’re eligible for free NHS prescriptions (under 16, over 60, pregnant, have certain medical conditions, or receive benefits). If you normally pay for prescriptions, you’ll pay the standard NHS prescription charge (currently £9.90 per item) if medication is needed. The consultation itself is always free.
For many common conditions, Pharmacy First provides a faster alternative to booking a GP appointment.
Pharmacists are trained to assess these specific conditions and can provide treatment where appropriate. If your symptoms require further investigation or specialist care, we will refer you to the most appropriate healthcare service.
No. You do not need to be registered with our pharmacy to use the Pharmacy First Service.
As long as you are registered with a GP practice in England and meet the eligibility criteria, you can access the service regardless of where you normally collect your prescriptions.
Where clinically appropriate, pharmacists can supply prescription-only medicines, including antibiotics for certain conditions covered by the Pharmacy First Service.
Antibiotics are only supplied when they are considered necessary and suitable following a clinical assessment.
Eligibility varies depending on the condition being assessed.
For example:
Earache consultations are available for children and adults within specific age ranges.
UTI treatment is available for eligible women aged 16 to 64 years.
Other conditions have their own eligibility criteria.
Our pharmacy team can advise whether you are eligible for the service.
Yes. With your consent, details of your consultation and any treatment supplied can be shared with your GP practice. This helps ensure your medical records remain accurate and up to date.

Yes. Pharmacists can assess sore throat symptoms and determine whether treatment is required.
Many sore throats improve without antibiotics, but some infections may require additional treatment. The pharmacist will assess your symptoms and advise on the most appropriate management.
